WORKSHOPS & CLASSES

OPS membership boasts not only gifted painters, but excellent teachers and workshop instructors as well.  Visit this page often for updates and new workshop listings.  Classes and workshops are open to any artist wishing to advance their skills to the next level.  You need not be a member of Outdoor Painters Society to attend one of these workshops....but after meeting and painting along with some of our members, we hope you will consider joining this active outdoor painting group. (We paint indoors too!)

This isn't a "how to paint" class.  It is assumed that students already know how to draw and are knowledgeable in their medium.  All traditional media is welcome in this class.  Demonstrations will be in pencil, watercolor and/or oil.  Once an artist learns how to use the materials of their chosen medium, the next step in the growth of an artist involves the difficult decisions of WHAT to paint, WHERE to begin, and WHEN to call it "finished"!  This class will focus on the challenges painters encounter with specific emphasis on seeing, simplifying, and organizing the subject matter.  An artist must simplify (edit), the vast amount of information (detail), identify the most essential elements and organize them (composition & design) in a way that "reads" (values).  Many painters struggle in these areas:

  • Subject Matter or Theme Selection (do you relate? is it within your skill set?)
  • Composition (organization of elements)
  • Design (Every mark matters!)
  • Simplification (editing out detail)
  • Massing the values  (seeing elements as light, medium and dark)
  • When to call it finished.

Workshop offers daily lecture, demo, and lesson assignments.  Class limited to 15 to provide ample opportunity for questions and individual easel-side assistance.
