Plein Air Southwest “ROCKS” the Texas Coast

The first year of the redesigned Plein Air Southwest to a full on outdoor competition in Rockport Texas excelled expectations and “rocked” the Texas Coast.  Outdoor Painters Society teamed up with Rockport Center for the Arts to host the Show and Sale in their downtown location on Austin Street.  Artists dealt with several hours of pouring rain on the first day then bright sunshine brought relentless heat, and wind gusts, that kept the artists clinging to their easels for the remainder of the week.  The vibe was so positive with locals stopping by to encourage and thank artists for just being there, providing a breath of normalcy to the hurricane-ravaged peninsulas.

In spite of all that 2018 Plein Air Southwest artists turned out some stellar work that made Juror Joshua Been take a step back when he arrived.  Each of the 52-juried participating artists had to choose their two best works from the weeklong effort.  Sweeping Best of Show and Artists Choice was Suzie Baker of Houston.  Her High & Dry staked a claim on the gallery wall even though her subtle use of colors reigned.  Feeling very sure of his choice, Joshua Been danced around the gallery floor, grinning ear to ear stating “very seldom does my Best of Show selection coincide with Artists Choice!  I’m just going to pat myself on the back.”

Jason Sacran of Arkansas followed up the awards with his Rockport Dusk and Missouri based Patrick Saunders dramatic Ready for Dawn caused another jaw drop.  Saturday morning didn’t disappoint with the Quick Draw producing yet another round of paintings for Judge Been to analyze.  Diane Frossard of Texas walked away with a thousand dollar award for Morning Harbor.

Awards of cash and merchandise valued over $25,000 were presented to 24 artists May 26th culminating the painting week.  Artists captured scenes of Fulton and Rockport Harbors, Aransas National Wildlife Refuge, windswept Oak Trees and Port Aransas, as well as alleyways, piers and cottages in Rockport, Fulton, and Port Aransas.   Others Awards of Excellence winners were Beth Bathe for We Will Rebuild, Robert Rohm for Torn Sails.  Awards of Merit went to Spencer Meagher for Walkway to the Beach, R. Gregory Summers for West Sirius Sea Drill, Ted Clemens for Airing the Nets, Joe Anna Arnett for Stilted, Kaye Franklin for Dunes on the Beach, Beverly Boren’s Beach Strollers, Nyle Gordon for The Big Tree, John Caggiano for Red Trim, Fran Ellisor for Looking for the Pearl, Tammie Lane for Rudy’s Boat and Christy Kidwell for Down but not Forgotten.  Rounding out Joshua Been’s selections for Honorable Mention are D.K. Palecek for Alley Blues, Diane Frossard’s Cove Harbor, Chuck Rawle for Copano Bay, Stuart Roper for Bait Shop, Carol Devereaux for Surfer’s Delight, Robert Simone’s Fulton Harbor Morning and Sherri Thomas for Texas Oaks.

The show continues until June 9th at Rockport Center for the Arts with additional paintings displayed across the street at Windway Gallery.  Digital images of the entire 2018 PASW can be viewed at www.outdoorpainterssociety.com site.        ( Thank you Nancy Tyler for the great write up )
