Plein air portfolio (22)

I wouldn't be here if I didn't love painting outdoors. I am a confident painter, but unfortunately with no formal training and bad eyesight. A few years back, laser eye surgery made my eyes too sensitive to light but I am learning to use my eyes in other ways. So if you see me painting with my sunglasses on, you’ll know why. I now focus on composition, line and shape, not values or light as I cannot distinguish value subtleties when I’m outdoors. I am more comfortable painting large format due to a preference for gestural lines. Plein air is like boot camp for me. I do it and consider it ‘training’. It strengthens the muscles that I use in the studio. I spend six months of the year in Canada but when I'm in Texas, plein air road trips are my favourite. Thank you OPS for giving me a safe group to travel and hang out with.
