April 2020

Where:  Palo Duro State Park, Texas

When:   April 16-18, 2020

The April paint out location is the one you’ve been waiting for!  It’s time to revisit the popular Palo Duro State Park, located in the Texas panhandle 27 miles southeast of Amarillo.  The landscape is dramatic; canyon walls, red rocks, low water crossings and Junipers.  Load up your gear and head out to the “Texas version” of the Grand Canyon - our own Palo Duro Canyon.  Palo Duro is the 2nd largest canyon in the United States.

This terracotta badland attracts plein air painters for hundreds of miles from all directions.  Formed by the Prairie Dog Town Fork of the Red River, the Canyon is 120 miles long, as much as 20 miles wide, and has a maximum depth of more than 800 feet. Its elevation at the rim is 3,500 feet above sea level.

If you still have a couple of 10x20 panorama canvases lying around, there’s no excuse now!

Getting to Palo Duro State Park via Amarillo.  The park is 27 miles southeast of Amarillo (I-27 S to TX 217 E, then look for sign to the park entrance).
