I wouldn't be here if I didn't love painting outdoors. I am a confident painter but a beginner, with no formal training and bad eyesight. Laser eye surgery a few years back made my eyes too sensitive to light but I am learning to use my eyes in other ways. I'm not making excuses for my lack of professional skills, but I do see an afterimage when I look down at a panel in the light so it gets annoying. I now focus on composition, line and shape, not values or tones as I cannot distinguish them outdoors. I am more comfortable painting large format due to a preference for gestural lines. I worked as a visual arts instructor where I picked up a theory or two. I am painting in acrylics for now, self-taught in acrylics (learning by experimenting and using them every day but acrylic is a forgiving medium) Plein air is like boot camp for me. It strengthens everything that I do in the studio. I spend six months of the year in Canada but when I'm in Texas, plein air trips are my favourite place to hang out with OPS friends.
