MARK YOUR CALENDARS - In conjunction with Plein Air Southwest Salon 2017, we're excited to announce that KENN BACKUS, the awards juror.... will conduct the annual OPS sponsored workshop April 13 - 15, 2017.

This workshop is limited to 15 participants and will fill up fast. The total cost is $475.00

  "Island Reflections"  9x12 Oil

 “Composition and Brushwork”

3-day workshop

Open to intermediate and advanced artists.

The class will be taught in oil, but  other mediums-acrylics, water color and pastel- are welcomed.

NOTE: The information taught in the first two days of this workshop is best conveyed indoors in a controlled and uninterrupted environment. The third day students will apply what they have learned in an outdoor setting.

Creating a strong visual should be a paramount decision of the artist. Grasping the attention of the viewer to our works, should be first and foremost. After seizing their attention the artist needs to retain their interest with competent and expressive paint application. In this workshop emphasis will be placed upon developing dynamic and more powerful compositions, teaming this with expressive medium application or what’s known as brushwork.

The creative process is based on a compilation of fundamentals and principals, which are essential in the development of representational paintings. The knowledge and opportunity to develop your skills from this workshop can be applied to various discipline such as, plein air, still life, landscape, figurative or portrait painting.

Kenn will work with you to help further develop your individual style. He will identify your strong and weak points - help build on the strong points and try to overcome the weak areas.  He teaches through both lecture and demonstration, but to further your painting development he will also work with your unique vision.

Kenn Erroll Backhaus

Kenn was born in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin in 1951 and spent much of his childhood on the family farm near Burnett, Wisconsin.  His fondness for nature became the catalyst for his art.  Kenn’s parents encouraged his artistic education and following High School, he attended Layton School of Art in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  As a commercial designer and illustrator Kenn received many awards at both local and national levels, which included acceptance in the 30th Annual Society of Illustrators Show in New York City.  Although Kenn took pride in his commercial successes, his heart always belonged to the fine art of outdoor painting.

With his developing interest in the historic traditions of plein air painting, Kenn decided in 1984, to devote more time to his passion for painting and the love of the outdoors. His works have been juried into many shows across the country and his paintings have been honored with numerous Best of Show awards and distinctions.  He regularly serves as an acceptance juror and awards judge for many shows around the country.  He enjoys giving back and has served as an instructor for over ten years.

Kenn was part of a PBS series entitled, Plein Air, Painting the American Landscape”. Kenn is now one of the host artists of a new high definition 13-part series, Passport & Palette™ represents the next generation of art education on public television.

Kenn is a Signature Artist Member of the California Art Club, a Master Signature Member of both the Oil Painters of America and the American Impressionist Society, a Signature member of the Plein-Air Painters of America.  He also served as President of the Plein-Air Painters of America.

Kenn was one of the Master Artists at the first Plein Air Convention hosted by the Plein Air Magazine in Las Vegas, NV in April of 2012.  Kenn was also invited as one of the Master Artists at the Weekend With the Masters Workshop and Conference in September of 2012, held at the luxurious Rancho Bernardo Inn, near San Diego, California.
