My style is an
impressionistic one leaning toward representational. Often
dubbed as "gestural" in stroke quality and drawing. I tend to
make a living as indicating, not rendering. I call it "a kind
of impatient realism". I depict images fairly quickly and
simply and when a painting happens it does please me much.
When one becomes to labored it tends to drain me. Much
detail is scarce on my canvases. Energy is quite
evident! Truly, I hope my art pleases the folks who take a lasting
glance.
Subjects vary:
architecture and figures (street scenes) including Bruges, Belgium
to cities across Italy (Venice, Rome, Florence, Portofino, etc.)
Add still life; children, animals, ladies, cowboys and Indian life.
All of my interests always focusing on "mood" and the effects of
light as it passes across the form, whatever that might be.
After coming across an
issue of Arizona Highways (1960's) featuring Nicolai Fechin, my
professional goal in life to become a painter was instantly
jump-started! Then again, after 30+years as an illustrator, and
having my fill with "art direction", I had to finally do my calling
in art - paint and try to make a living at it!
Those artists who have made
an impact on my art: Nicolai Fechin, John Singer
Sergeant, Anders Zorn, Henry Fantin Latour, Joaquin Sorolla, Robert
Henri, Edward Hopper, George Bellows (mostly oil paintings),
Sergeant's watercolors and those of Frank Brangwyn also. |
