Artist's Statement
‘I try to capture the essence
or spirit of a place. My work often gets referred to as representational
though I have issues with that phrase. Rarely does nature present you
with the ideal ready-made composition. Painting is very much like
writing; there is a lot of design and editing involved. They are very
similar disciplines. The painting process for me is not so much the
struggle with applying the paint but choosing what is essential and what
can be edited out. The most powerful writers said a lot in very few
words; for me, it is the same struggle to achieve a powerful honest
impression of a place in as fewer brushstrokes as possible. Too much
information and the impact of the painting is lost. So when I am on a
location I am rarely painting a straightforward ‘representation’ of what
is in front of me – there is a level of interpretation and design too. A
great painting must have all the necessary facets of good color harmony,
balance and design plus it must try to capture the spirit of the moment
or the place. The challenge in painting is to somehow control all of
these factors while ensuring that the actual application of paint is
bold, direct and placed without hesitancy or doubt.’
